Some things to note ...

In the Village of Masset you have 3 grocery options.  Co-Op, open 9am-6pm every day except holidays, has most everything you'll likely need.  Causeway, open  7am - 11pm daily, is our corner store and has a limited inventory but can help out in a pinch.  On Fridays we have our Farmers Market, open 11am - 2pm.  It's definitely worth a visit if you're around.  Beyond that, if you fish and forage, you'll eat like a king!

One of the true joys of Haida Gwaii is our commitment to what's truly important.  Family, friends, self, and nature. 

On statutory holidays there are typically no businesses open except Causeway; our world stops for the day.  This is especially important to be aware of if you're arriving on one of these holidays.  Your grocery and restaurant options will be very, very limited.

Shopping options in the Village are very limited.  Co-Op, Causeway, Home Hardware, Fields, and the BC Liquor Store are as brick and mortar as we get here.  Additionally we have the Farmer's Market and local independent artisans and vendors.  We highly recommend visiting these artisans as they offer an amazing array of creations unique to Haida Gwaii.

On Haida Gwaii, all recreational fishing requires a license.  The license you'll need depends on where you intend to fish.  All licenses can be purchased online, but please note that you will need a printed copy on your person when fishing. 

Freshwater licenses can be obtained at www2.gov.bc.ca and 

Ocean fishing licenses (which includes crabbing) are located at www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca.

We have several dining out options, especially if you're willing to drive down to Port , which is about a 30 minute drive, or Daajing Giids, which is approximately 1.5 hour.

It's important to note though that these businesses can and do close without notice, so it's always a really good idea to call them or check online before you go and always have a back-up plan! 

How to describe our weather ...

Let's start with the bad.  On Haida Gwaii we average 19 days of rain each month.  That being said, rain typically does not last long.  Our weather changes very quickly and often.  If you bring a lightweight rain jacket you'll be ready for anything that comes.

The good.  When the sun comes out on Haida Gwaii, this is truly heaven on earth!  Come prepared and you'll enjoy every moment.
